Battery recycling market Europe: Opportunity for a sustainable circular economy (German report)

Interim report 10/2021

In addition to quantifying battery cell production, a quantification of the future battery recycling market in Europe up to 2040 was also carried out. Currently, there is still very little recycling capacity in Germany and Europe, although battery recycling can potentially reduce dependence on imports from abroad. The necessary investments amount to around three billion euros up to 2040, while a value potential of five billion euros per year can be leveraged from 2040 onward. Recommendations for action and implications for Germany and Europe as a business location are also given.

On behalf of WG 4 and funded by the BMVI, a study was conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research (ISC) to quantify the battery recycling value network in Europe up to 2040. In addition to the WG 4 report based on this study, a short version of the study with a comprehensive presentation of the approach and results is now available online (in German).
