Automated and connected driving requires a high level of digitisation in the transport system. In order for vehicles and infrastructures to run in a smooth, reliable and safe manner, various complex technological requirements have to be met. Standards create a common ground for technological development. With its recently published Focus Roadmap “Automated and connected driving” and the White Paper “Recommendations for action for type approval and certification in a connected and automated mobility system”, WG 6 raises issues which need to be tackled in a timely manner.
“In order to implement automated and connected driving, we need regulatory requirements and standards which reflect the state of the art. Existing regulations need to be developed in a way that makes them useful for vehicles and infrastructure in a highly connected transport system. The regulations further need to fulfil environmental and safety requirements throughout the life cycle. In our two new reports, we have identified the rulebooks and standardisation needs for a connected and automated mobility system, which form the framework for enabling cutting-edge technologies in the mobility system,” explains Roland Bent, President of the German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies of DIN and VDE (DKE) and chair of NPM’s WG 6.
Focus Roadmap “Automated and connected driving”
Automation and connectivity lead to increases in product complexity and in requirements applying to interoperability and infrastructure. The focus roadmap provides a strategic framework for the needs-based advancement of standardisation activities in the area of automated and connected driving. It also gives an overview of existing standardisation bodies and forthcoming standardisation projects. Many of these projects are interdisciplinary and it is important to integrate all the disciplines concerned.
Various bodies are already dealing with the area of automated and connected driving, and their number is constantly increasing. New and flexible methods to coordinate standardisation activities are urgently required in order to make efficient use of existing resources.
White Paper “Recommendations for action for type approval and certification”
Vehicles can only be operated once registered. In order to be approved with regard to road safety, vehicles have to verifiably meet applicable safety and environmental regulations. In regular inspections, the technical condition is checked throughout the life cycle. The White Paper depicts the status quo of the processes for certification and type approval of vehicles in the context of a co-operative, connected and partially automated mobility system. It further defines recommendations for action and requirements for functional in-service changes which are possible even under the current regime. The main focus of the review lies in certification processes for automated modes of road transport as well as the requirements for a communication and transport infrastructure. The review further incorporates requirements applying to periodical checks and data processing.
