- Until the end of 2021, the RealLabHH project is set to be a real-world laboratory for digital mobility and a simulator for different innovative elements related to the future of mobility.
- Under the leadership of public transport company Hamburger Hochbahn AG, some 30 project partners are developing digital mobility solutions in a joint ecosystem in Hamburg city and metropolitan region.
- Citizens are able to try out what’s on offer and get involved via participation and dialogue events.
- The findings of the real-world laboratory will be presented at the ITS World Con-gress in Hamburg in October 2021.
A total of 11 sub-projects aim at providing an answer to the question of how digitalisation can make the transport system more sustainable, safer, more comfortable and more reliable. This applies to both public transport and haulage, to rural areas with their specific mobility require-ments as well as to urban contexts.
Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Andreas Scheuer: “We want to utilise the increase in digitisation for our mobility and create innovative new services for people to experience. We are going to gain valuable insights by testing various intelligent mobility solutions simultaneously. Together, we want to find out how we can make the new mobility system attrac-tive for cities and rural areas, and in this way make a contribution to climate protection.”
The public debate on digital mobility services is at the fore-front of the overall project and is expected to provide key insights into which mobility solutions in which shape or form will stand up in practice. The envisaged sub-projects include ideas such as a mobility budget instead of a company car, the creation of a supplier-independent mobility platform, and solutions for particularly vulnerable transport users. One of the hallmarks of the project is continuous and comprehensive citizen involvement.
First Mayor of Hamburg, Dr. Peter Tschentscher: “In Reallabor Hamburg, a digital infra-structure is being developed which makes transport safer, more comfortable and more climate-friendly. This includes micro-depots to reduce logistics traffic, autonomous driving, on-demand shuttles and an app which connects different mobility options. All projects are being tested in real life and presented at the world congress for intelligent transport systems in our city in October 2021. I wish Hamburger Hochbahn and all partners a successful implementation of their future of mobility projects.”
NPM’s WG 3 Digitalisation for the mobility sector initiator of the project
The RealLabHH project was initiated by the National Platform Future of Mobility (NPM). The ex-perts of WG 3 have recognised the fact that digital developments in the mobility sector are not to be seen as separate from societal changes.
“In the last 18 months, we have been able to develop a number of recommendations for action relating to the digitalisation of the mobility system. However, when it comes to complex issues, such as people’s readiness to change their user behaviour in case of a new mobility service or the ability of different modes of transport to work together to create an intermodal mobility offer, these new approaches need to be tested in real-life conditions. The real-world lab in Hamburg is the space where the next few months will show whether and how the ideas and possibilities of a largely connected mobility system can be implemented in people’s everyday lives,” explains Klaus Fröhlich, until end of June Member of the Board of Management at BMW AG and head of NPM’s WG 3.
“In the last few years, Hamburg has become a hub for intelligent, pioneering mobility solutions. RealLabHH marks the beginning of the next stage of development. The envisaged links of relevant players – down to the project level – provide an additional impetus for innovation”, adds Henrik Falk, Chairman of the Management Board of Hamburger Hochbahn AG.
Presentation of the findings at the ITS World Congress in Hamburg in 2021
The key aim of the RealLabHH project is the development of recommendations for action to make the mobility system more environment- and climate-friendly. The findings and vehi-cles/infrastructures/apps developed for the real-world laboratory in the city of Hamburg and sur-rounding area will be presented at the ITS World Congress in 2021. Endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, the city of Hamburg will be hosting the largest congress for intelligent transport systems and services worldwide which will take place from 11th to 15th October 2021. The RealLabHH project runs until the end of 2021 and is subsidised by the BMVI to the tune of EUR 20.5 million.
