User-friendly design of mobility services through platform-based, intermodal solutions

- WG 3 Digitalisation for the mobility sector explains in its new report how platform services are to be designed in order to provide a timely answer to open questions on data exchange, ID management, security architecture and interoperability as well as questions regarding liability and arbitration.
The report focuses on the central question of how a collection of intermodal mobility services can be implemented in a way that is meaningful to the public. The starting point is a single, platform-based, intermodal mobility application which enables customers to plan, book and pay for a journey or a mobility service from start to finish. At the same time, different modes of transport are made available at any time in a demand-orientated manner and in combination along the same route. Other services such as finding and booking a car parking space can be integrated as an additional offer.
The prerequisite for an intermodal integration of mobility services is a close co-operation between mobility service providers and infrastructure as well as the exchange of data. This means that mobility can be organised in a more efficient way: the mobility service offer becomes more varied, existing capacities are made better use of, provision as a whole is improved and overall transport usage is minimised.
Intermodal travelling is of course possible today, but users often see it as cumbersome. There is no fully integrated service offer and people are put off from switching due to inconvenient travel times, big booking efforts, losses in comfort and high travel costs.
Free-market processes have not yet led to fully integrated intermodal mobility services. One of the reasons for this are the mobility service providers themselves who are concerned that their own mobility services will be side-lined. Another reason are digital interfaces between services offered by various partner companies which require great efforts in terms of integration and operation.
That is why the actual implementation of a consistent service offer is going to be tested in the real-world laboratory Hamburg which was initiated by WG 3 as a test lab for innovations in the area of digitised mobility.
In its report, WG 3 addresses key areas for action and forward-looking recommendations intended for politics and business with the aim of a swift implementation of a digital multi- and intermodal mobility system. These are broken down into the following areas:
- Provision of basic services for mobility options or for the use of public transport: basic services for intermodal mobility offers as well as their integration.
- Governance principles for the basic services provided by mobility providers: interoperability and standardisation, general ID management, IT security and data protection as well as models for arbitration and drafting of contracts.
